This video recording consists of four segments. The first, "Byrd's Flight to Antarctica," covers the 1929 Richard Byrd expedition to the South Pole. The second, consists of an episode from the network broadcast television program "Expedition" using the same subject matter. This segment contains the Ralston-Purina and Checkerboard Square commercials shown when the program was originally telecast. The third segment "Assault on Antarctica," follows the activities of United States Navy Air Squadron 6 which provided logistical support efforts (Operation Deepfreeze) for International Geophysical Year 1957-1958. The fourth segment is a New Zealand television broadcast from 1968 featuring a United States Navy rear admiral who explained the mission and history of Operation Deepfreeze over the previous ten years.

Rear Admiral Richard Evelyn Byrd Jr. (October 25, 1888 – March 11, 1957) was an American naval officer and explorer. He was a recipient of the Medal of Honor, the highest honor for valor given by the United States, and was a pioneering American aviator, polar explorer, and organizer of polar logistics.
